Sherin Monachan, 28, of Merrick, New York, was taken into custody after officers reviewed security footage from a West Haven business that reported suspected animal cruelty, police said.
Investigators said the video showed Monachan sitting in her car with a dog in the front seat between 9:40 a.m. and 9:50 a.m. While parked, she was allegedly seen punching the dog repeatedly—approximately 36 times—in the head, face, and stomach, according to West Haven police.
West Haven Animal Control officers seized the dog, which is now in a safe location until the case goes before a judge.
Monachan was charged with cruelty to animals and remains in custody on bond, according to police.
